Deserts are dry, sunny areas of the world that receive less than 10 inches of rain each year and have a very high rate of evaporation. With many cloudless days, heat builds up and is then lost at night. Temperatures can drop as much as 75 degrees in a day!
The roots of most desert plants spread far in all directions. The leaves are small and thick. Animals, adapted to this extreme climate, rest in the shade during the day and come out at night to eat. Body coloration, hiding places, and techniques used to capture moisture help keep animals alive in the desert.
